Terms of Use
Last updated: July 2026
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Story Gliders website, applications, and related services (collectively, the “Services”). By accessing or using the Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you may not use the Services.
Please also read our Privacy Policy and Security page, which are incorporated into these Terms by reference.
1. Who we are
The Services are provided by Story Gliders Inc. (“we”, “us”, or “our”). References to “you” or “your” mean the parent or legal guardian who registers for and manages an account, and, where the context requires, any child who uses the Services under that parent’s supervision. If you access the Services in another approved role — for example as an invited tutor (see Section 4) or an approved partner — references to “you” also include you in that role, and these Terms apply to your use of the Services in that role.
2. Eligibility
- You must have reached the age of majority in your jurisdiction (and in any case be at least 18 years old) to create an account and use the Services.
- Children may only use the Services through a child profile created and managed by a parent or legal guardian. Children do not create their own accounts.
- By creating a child profile, you represent that you are the child’s parent or legal guardian and that you consent to the child’s use of the Services in accordance with these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
3. Accounts
- You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account.
- You agree to provide accurate information when creating your account and child profiles, and to keep that information up to date.
- You are responsible for your child’s use of the Services and for ensuring it is appropriate and supervised as you see fit.
- You must notify us promptly at contact@storygliders.com if you become aware of any unauthorized use of your account.
4. Tutors and other invited roles
Some features let a parent invite a reading tutor to view and support their child’s progress, and let approved tutors hold their own Story Gliders account. If you use the Services as a tutor, these Terms apply to you, and references to “you” include you in your tutor role. In addition:
- You may access a child’s information only with the parent’s permission, only through the tools we provide, and only to provide reading support to that child.
- You must keep child information confidential, must not copy or extract it beyond the export tools we provide, and must not use it for any other purpose (including marketing, advertising, or training any system or model).
- You must delete any copies of child information you hold outside the Services when the family or Story Gliders ends your access, except where the law requires you to keep them.
- Parents control whether a child’s real name is shared with you — child profiles are shared under an alias unless the parent chooses otherwise.
- We may suspend or remove tutor access at any time to protect families.
If you use tutor features in the course of a business, you are responsible for your own legal obligations to your clients. If you have been approved for a Story Gliders partner or referral program, any additional program terms we provide to you govern that participation.
5. Description of the Services
Story Gliders is an educational reading platform that helps children practice reading through personalized, AI-generated stories with read-aloud pronunciation feedback and comprehension activities. The Services include:
- AI-generated personalized stories, illustrations, and comprehension quizzes.
- Read-aloud practice with real-time pronunciation assessment and feedback.
- Child profile management, reading progress tracking, and parental controls.
- Custom characters and places to personalize stories.
The Services are designed as a supplementary educational tool and are not a substitute for professional reading instruction, speech therapy, or educational assessment.
6. Beta program
The Services are currently offered as an invite-only beta. During the beta period:
- Features may be added, modified, or removed without prior notice as we iterate and improve.
- The Services are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranties of any kind.
- We may experience occasional downtime, bugs, or interruptions. We will make reasonable efforts to minimize disruption.
- Beta access may be revoked at our discretion. We will provide reasonable notice where possible.
- Feedback license: if you choose to send us feedback, suggestions, ideas, or bug reports about the Services, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use that feedback for the purpose of operating, maintaining, and improving the Services. You do not have to provide feedback, and you are not entitled to compensation for feedback you choose to give. This license does not transfer ownership of anything, and it does not affect any intellectual property or other rights you already hold or create independently of the feedback. You may ask us to stop using identifiable feedback by contacting us at contact@storygliders.com; we will do so for future use, though we may keep changes already incorporated into the Services.
7. Billing, subscriptions & payments
Authorization to charge
By subscribing to a paid plan, you authorize Story Gliders to charge your payment method on a recurring basis for the applicable subscription fee until you cancel. You confirm that you are authorized to use the payment method provided.
7-day money-back guarantee
Every new subscription includes a 7-day money-back guarantee. If you cancel within 7 days of your first subscription payment — from your dashboard, via our payment provider's billing portal, or by deleting your account — we will automatically refund everything paid on that subscription, in full, to your original payment method, and the subscription (including access to the Services) ends immediately. Exercising the guarantee also closes your account: your account and all associated data — including child profiles, stories, and reading progress — are permanently deleted, and returning to the Services requires signing up again as a new account. Refunds typically appear within 5–10 business days depending on your bank. The guarantee applies once per family and does not apply to payments that are subject to a chargeback or payment dispute, which are handled through the dispute process instead.
Refund policy
Outside the 7-day money-back guarantee, all fees are non-refundable except where required by applicable law. Cancellation stops future charges but does not entitle you to a refund for the current billing period.
Billing disputes
Before initiating a chargeback or payment dispute with your bank or card issuer, you agree to contact us at contact@storygliders.com to resolve the issue. We will make reasonable efforts to resolve legitimate billing concerns within 5–10 business days. If you initiate a chargeback that we determine to be invalid, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account.
Failed payments
If a payment fails, your payment provider may retry the charge on its standard schedule. While a payment remains unresolved, your account is marked past due and access to paid features (including new story generation and speech features) may be restricted or suspended until payment is resolved. We will notify you at your registered email address when a payment fails, and before your subscription is cancelled for non-payment.
Price changes
We may change subscription fees from time to time. If we increase fees, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice before the change takes effect. Your continued use of the Services after the new fees take effect constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree to the new fees, you may cancel your subscription before the change takes effect. We may also adjust fair-use limits and the features included in a plan over time, with the same advance notice, and we aim to protect existing subscribers from sudden change wherever we can.
Fair use of AI features
Your subscription includes AI-generated features — stories, illustrations, pronunciation assessment, and text-to-speech — subject to fair-use limits. These limits are set well above typical family usage and exist only to prevent misuse and keep the Services sustainable.
8. AI-generated content
A core part of the Services involves content generated by artificial intelligence, including stories, illustrations, character suggestions, and comprehension questions. By using these features, you acknowledge and agree that:
- Content quality: AI-generated content is produced algorithmically and may occasionally contain inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or unexpected phrasing. We take reasonable steps to ensure age-appropriateness but cannot guarantee perfection in every instance.
- AI hallucination: AI models can “hallucinate” — that is, generate information that sounds plausible but is factually incorrect, invented, or misleading. This means stories and comprehension questions may contain errors, fictional facts, or inaccurate educational content even when presented confidently. You should not rely on AI-generated content as a source of factual information, and we encourage parents to review content with their children where accuracy matters.
- Content moderation: we apply safety guardrails and content filtering to AI outputs. If you encounter content you believe is inappropriate, please report it to us at contact@storygliders.com and we will investigate promptly.
- No professional advice: AI-generated stories and reading assessments are for educational entertainment. They do not constitute professional educational, medical, or therapeutic advice.
- Privacy protections: real names are never sent to our AI content-generation providers (Anthropic and OpenAI). We use a three-stage tokenization pipeline that replaces names with privacy aliases (substitute placeholder names that mean nothing to the AI) before generation, converts them to opaque tokens for storage, and resolves them back to real names only on your device. For text-to-speech and pronunciation assessment, the child’s first name may appear in text sent to Microsoft Azure Speech Services so that stories are read aloud naturally and reading accuracy can be assessed. Microsoft does not store this data after processing. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
- No model training: your data is not used to train AI models. Our AI providers process requests under API terms that prohibit using customer data for model training.
9. Speech and audio features
The Services include read-aloud and pronunciation features that use your child’s device microphone. By enabling these features, you consent to the following:
- Audio from the microphone is processed by Microsoft Azure Speech Services. Depending on the feature, audio is either streamed directly from your device to Azure (live reading tracking) or recorded as a short clip and relayed through our servers to Azure for analysis (pronunciation and spoken-comprehension scoring), where it is held only transiently in memory for that request.
- We do not store, save, or retain any recordings of your child’s voice. Microphone audio is never written to disk or to our database and is discarded immediately after processing. Only derived results (such as pronunciation accuracy scores and text transcripts) are kept.
- You may disable microphone access at any time through your device or browser settings. Some features (such as read-aloud practice) will be unavailable without microphone access.
10. Acceptable use
You agree to use the Services only for their intended educational and personal family purpose. You must not:
- Attempt to manipulate AI prompts or inputs to generate inappropriate, harmful, or offensive content.
- Use the Services for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws or regulations.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the Services.
- Scrape, crawl, or use automated means to access the Services or extract data, except as expressly permitted.
- Interfere with or disrupt the Services, servers, or networks connected to the Services.
- Share your account credentials or beta access with unauthorized third parties.
- Use the Services to collect personal information about other users.
- Prompt and data hygiene: include personally identifiable or sensitive information in character names, place names, preferences, or story prompts. These fields (or a de-identified version of them) are sent to AI providers for content generation (see Section 8 for how names are tokenized), and you should not enter information you would not want processed by a third-party service. In particular, do not include:
- Full names of children or other individuals (first and last), nicknames tied to identity, or school, daycare, or teacher names.
- Home addresses, precise locations, phone numbers, email addresses, social media handles, or account IDs.
- Photos, voiceprints, government IDs, or payment information.
- Health or therapy notes, diagnoses, IEP details, or other highly sensitive child information.
You are solely responsible for the content you submit through free-text fields (including character names, place names, preferences, and story prompts). If you choose to include personal or sensitive information despite the guidance above, Story Gliders is not responsible for any resulting disclosure or processing of that information by third-party services.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access for violations of these rules.
11. Intellectual property
Our content
The Story Gliders name, logo, branding, website design, user interface, underlying technology, and all proprietary content are owned by or licensed to Story Gliders Inc. and are protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works of our proprietary content without our prior written consent.
Your content
Content you provide (such as character names, place names, and preferences) remains yours. By submitting content to the Services, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to use it solely to provide and improve the Services for you.
AI-generated content
Stories, illustrations, and other content generated by the AI through the Services are provided for your personal, non-commercial family use. You are free to keep, print, and share these with family and friends for personal enjoyment. You may not use AI-generated content for commercial purposes without our prior written consent. The legal status of ownership of AI-generated content is evolving; we make no representations regarding copyright ownership of such content.
12. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law:
- The Services are provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
- We do not warrant that the Services will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that any defects will be corrected.
- We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-generated content, pronunciation assessments, reading level evaluations, or other outputs of the Services.
- The Services are an educational supplement and not a replacement for qualified teaching, speech-language pathology, or other professional services. You should not rely solely on the Services for assessing or addressing your child’s reading or speech development.
- We do not warrant that information you voluntarily submit through the Services (including through free-text fields such as character names, place names, preferences, or story prompts) will be immune from unauthorized access, disclosure, or security incidents, notwithstanding the technical safeguards described in our Privacy Policy and Security page.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Story Gliders Inc., its officers, directors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, use, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Services, whether based on warranty, contract, tort (including negligence), or any other legal theory, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Our total aggregate liability, per claim and in the aggregate, for all claims arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD$100).
Without limiting the foregoing, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we shall not be liable for damages arising from unauthorized disclosure of, or security incidents involving, information you voluntarily submit through the Services, including through free-text fields processed by third-party AI providers.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or fraudulent misrepresentation.
14. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Story Gliders Inc. and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and reasonable legal costs that a third party brings against us and that are caused by: (a) your breach of these Terms; (b) your unlawful or wrongful use of the Services; (c) your infringement of a third party’s rights; or (d) content you submit through the Services that you were not entitled to submit.
This obligation does not apply to the extent the claim, liability, loss, or cost arises from our own negligence, breach of these Terms, breach of our legal obligations (including our privacy and data-protection obligations), or wilful misconduct. We will notify you promptly of any claim we ask you to cover, will not settle it in a way that admits fault or imposes obligations on you without your consent (not to be unreasonably withheld), and you may participate in its defence with your own lawyer.
Nothing in this clause limits or excludes any rights, guarantees, or remedies you have under laws that cannot be excluded by contract — including the Australian Consumer Law, applicable consumer-protection legislation in your country or province, and your data-protection rights. Where any part of this clause would be unfair, void, or unenforceable under such laws, it does not apply to you to that extent.
15. Termination
- By you: you may cancel your subscription or stop using the Services at any time. If you cancel within 7 days of your first subscription payment, the money-back guarantee applies: your payment is refunded in full, access ends immediately, and your account and all associated data are permanently deleted (see Section 7). Otherwise, cancelling stops future charges but does not entitle you to a refund for the current billing period (see Section 7). You may delete your account and all associated child profiles and data through the parent portal, or by contacting us at contact@storygliders.com. If you delete your account while a subscription is active, your subscription is cancelled and deletion completes at the end of the current billing period; you can cancel the deletion until then.
- By us: we may suspend or terminate your access to the Services at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice unless termination is due to a violation of these Terms or is required for safety or legal reasons.
- Effect of termination: upon termination, your right to use the Services ceases immediately. Any active subscription will be cancelled and no further charges will be made, but — outside the 7-day money-back guarantee (see Section 7) — you will not receive a refund for the current billing period unless required by applicable law. We will delete your account data and all associated child profiles in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification) will continue to apply.
16. Third-party services
The Services rely on third-party providers for core functionality, including Anthropic (story generation, comprehension questions, and evaluation of reading answers), OpenAI (illustrations and avatar images, character suggestions, and content-safety moderation), and Microsoft Azure Speech Services (pronunciation assessment and text-to-speech). We also use Stripe for payment processing, Brevo for transactional email, and Supabase and Vercel for hosting and infrastructure. These services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the practices or availability of third-party services. For full details on what data is shared with each provider, see our Privacy Policy Section 12.
17. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. This choice of law does not deprive you of the protection afforded by mandatory provisions of the law of your country or province of habitual residence.
Informal resolution: before filing any formal proceedings, you agree to first contact us at contact@storygliders.com and attempt to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.
Jurisdiction: subject to the consumer rights paragraph below, any dispute that cannot be resolved informally shall be submitted to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in the Province of Ontario, Canada. We and you each retain the right to bring proceedings in any competent court in the jurisdiction where you reside.
Consumer rights: if you are a consumer in Canada, the United States, Australia, or any other jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection laws, nothing in this section limits or overrides your statutory rights. You may bring proceedings in the courts of your country, province, or state of residence, and you benefit from any mandatory consumer protections under local law that cannot be waived by contract.
International users: if you access the Services from outside Canada, you do so at your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local laws to the extent they apply. These Terms do not constitute an offer or invitation in any jurisdiction where such offer or invitation is unlawful.
18. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make a change, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
For changes that materially affect your rights or obligations, we will give you at least 30 days’ advance notice before the change takes effect — through the parent portal or by email to your registered address — and we will tell you the date the new Terms take effect. Minor or non-material changes (for example, clarifications or contact-detail updates) may take effect when posted.
If you do not agree to a material change, you may cancel your subscription, or close your account, before the change takes effect, and we will not charge you a penalty for doing so. If you have pre-paid for a period that extends beyond the change date, you may request a pro-rata refund of the unused, pre-paid portion. Your continued use of the Services after a material change takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. Changes will not apply retroactively, and where the law requires your express consent to a change, we will obtain it rather than rely on continued use.
19. General provisions
- Entire agreement: these Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Security page, constitute the entire agreement between you and Story Gliders Inc. regarding the Services.
- Severability: if any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
- Waiver: our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.
- Assignment: you may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations without restriction.
